Private Equity Stocks

A lot of asset management stocks, such as TROW, BLK, etc invest in public equity like mutual funds and ETFs. However, I came across a stock for a private equity firm, HLNE.

They do direct and fund on fund investments like venture capital, and other stuff that I don't really understand.

I was surprised to see it because I believe private equity firms are generally not publicly traded? Is it a bad sign if they are?

I wonder whether this type of stock would behave differently than an asset manager like BLK for example. What would one need to know when considering investing in a private equity firm?
