How investing in company beats inflation?

If I buy shares for a growth company, I'll hopefully beat inflation by selling in the future, when the company has grown and is worth more. This makes sense.

What happens when I buy from a big company that is already established and has grown as much as it can? If I look at Phillips 66, it looks like it reached it's top long ago and has stayed around it's same price. In that case, how does investing in it help me beat inflation?
