Joanna Stern at WSJ is a tech journalist that created a video attempting to show the promise and current limitations of AI being applied when facing the consumer at drive-thrus.
Key takeaways for me:
- Very good at basic orders.
- Has trouble discerning accurately when there's bad background noise. Tbf, I think even humans can struggle with this.
- Important limitations with more complex or tricky orders / questions. Especially allergies.
- Human will always need to be close by to override.
I believe this was a fairly unbiased and balanced attempt at pushing AI to “break”. Many of the kinks will be worked out and some will always require humans. However, it also seems very clear to me productivity will get a huge boost, freeing human capital to perform uniquely human tasks such as servicing or interacting with dining customers.
