Will the stock market crash if “free” trading is eliminated?

There has been much talk about meme stocks for months now. And, we've seen for many years now, that working-class people have been empowered by being able to buy and sell stocks directly. This has been enabled and grown in part by free trading platforms.

As soon as this week, there may be a ruling that will affect how some companies are able to profit from retail trader's activities, possibly cutting off the ability to provide “free” trades for most people.

If retail traders truly have been empowered and have any sort of sway on the markets as many have suggested, then what happens when all of that volume shuts off instantly? Will that happen? What will be the impact of eliminating free trades on the markets?
