Why do Apple’s retained earnings keep dropping each year despite massive earnings and small dividend payouts?

My understanding is that the formula for retained earnings is:

Retained Earnings = Prior Retained earning + Earnings – Dividends

Yet Apples's retained earnings have dropped every year for the past few years despite considerably large earnings and only paying out a small percentage of earnings as dividends. Why would this not show up as growing retained earnings?
