Why did companies like Microsoft and Google not move much for 10-15 years? And why couldn’t it happen again?

As the title states, why did this happen despite obvious business expansion? It makes one think, couldn’t this happen again? Esp To be considered after insane growth the last 5-7 years, can that CARG really keep up?
