Why are institutional investors allowed to trade anonymously in after hours trading in the US?

I'm not an investor, I'm just genuinely interested in the ways of the markets. And I'm genuinely puzzled as to what the business legitimacy would be for anonymity. Sorry if this is a stupid question! I can see a lot of societal disbenefits for a lack of transparency, but I'm guessing there must be positive reasons for allowing this.
