Whay are CD? How do i buy the

I want to buy some. To my understanding i can buy it from a bank. I have accounts with chase and WF. But how do i start the process? Can i buy it though Ruth or Rollover IRA? Or Ameritrade?

I Have 6500 in Roth thay i have used yet. I want to used it to buy CD and diversify my portfolio
