DISCLAIMER: I’m a Meta bull. I do not approve of Zucks management and his tone death attitude but I approve of his vision to an extent, he is just awful at projecting and marketing it.
What I think will really take off is social media by AR/VR. It’s impossible to tell exactly how as trends change on a dime but my idea is some sort of Vine like social media but from the POV. Mapping the area or scene with LIDAR for your friends and being ‘in’ the post whether in video or still image. This will not happen with this generation and until AR/VR becomes literally about as clutterless as wearing a pair of Ray Bans. We are currently in the generation of mobile phones, the next will be AR/VR. Much like how our parents were in the PC and internet revolution of the 80s and 90s. The next generation will see it as ‘hip’.
I also think e-commerce with AR/VR is going to blow up especially to see what it is your buying to scale and in front of you. How many times have you purchased something on Amazon and wish you had a scale model of the item to manipulate? The enterprise applications for AR/VR are absolutely endless.
AR/VR will change the way we interact with each other namely when LIDAR aided (for depth) photography is viewable by AR/VR. This already exists, it’s just not mainstream or in consumer hands yet. Imagine getting a VR rendering of your grandma before she passes and having that memory forever. Or you’re on deployment in the military and you get a VR video of your family counting down the days until you’re home. Designing your brand new house and adding all of your furniture models right there. Or shit, a girl on OF selling a VR rendering of herself.
All of this is already possible (some already being used) and an example of the limitless and practical applications of VR/AR tech.
The problem is the Zuck is a goober and is instead promoting the wrong shit. People seem to think the metaverse is the sims/second life when it is NOT. Meta is investing a nuclear amount into the tech to support the digital infrastructure behind all of this.
The ‘metaverse’ is more like another medium to interact with digital technology and information. By definition Runescape and World of Warcraft are both a metaverse but this is how I see the ‘metaverse’ as we all read about on CNBC come alive. How far away from mainstream total adoption to the scale of mobile phones? Who knows but the tech is making lightning progress. Will Meta come out on top long term? Who knows but they are the ones spearheading this and far ahead of everyone else along with having a massive moat and income to continue funding.
Feel free to shit on me
