What happens to growth companies when they stop growing and transition into a Value company?

Is this usually a violent time in terms of stock price? When companies stop being able to support their crazy forward P/E’s do we see a massive sell off? Or is it more gradual as I assume a lot of these companies start returning money to shareholders holders via higher dividends.
