What happens to a short position when the company is acquired for cash?

Will I end up with a short position in my portfolio that I will never be able to close?

As far as I understand I should not because if the company ceases to exist, is delisted from the exchange then no shares exist anymore(?). I couldn't be short of something that doesn't exist anymore. I would assume the broker would forcefully close my position (credit the shares*sp from my account). But these are just assumptions I am making, can't find a definitive answer and my broker's support is not very helpful. Instead they love to judge. Has anyone had any experience or knows?
