What happened in 1995?

Just doing some research into charts in the past. I found it interesting that SPX in 1995 suddenly started to shoot up. I'm going to dive through history to find out why, but I figured I'd ask here too.

What happened in 1995 that the subsequent years saw SPX significantly grow than before?
