Although there's very little public information when it comes to the success of Threads and how it has affected Twitter, there are ways to get some data.
One of the data sources that I sometimes use is Google Trends and there are 2 parts of this post that I’d like to focus on:
-
Day of the launch
-
Last week
The day of the launch (July 6th, 2023)
Based on Google Trends, the interest in Meta's Threads was 25% higher than the interest in Twitter (measured through Google searches). This is the case both worldwide and in the US. The reason why I check the US separately is due to the high advertisement rates.
Although there was a surge when it comes to Threads, interestingly enough, there was no significant impact when it comes to searches related to Twitter.
Can this be considered a successful launch? Maybe.
Last week (July 8th – July 15th, 2023)
This is where it gets interesting. Here's the ratio between Twitter / Threads searches:
Worldwide:
Beginning of the week – July 8/9: 4x
End of the week July 14/15: 17x
The US:
Beginning of the week – July 8/9: 3x
End of the week July 14/15: 10x
Despite getting a lot more traffic on the date of launch, it seems as if Twitter is winning this battle, at least so far.
It will be interesting to see the next quarterly results and the commentary by the management of Meta.
