The connection between the stock market and life insurance brokerage firms

I was recently terminated from my position at a brokerage firm for life insurance as soon as the stock market started to drop (around the time rumors started to fly about a recession coming). I also know that other former employees of mine were also terminated shortly after. My performance wasn’t a factor since it was sudden and when I was terminated, I wasn’t given any warnings prior verbal nor written. My question is, is there a connection between stocks and the brokerage firms that deal with life insurance? If so, what’s the connection & and brokerage firms lose money if a recession is to happen?
