As we go through what is clearly a bear market, I think it's healthy to look at the long view. Hear are some historical returns for the S&P 500 (inc. dividends).
1 year is -2.61%
2 year is 40.13% (18.4% annual)
5 year is 81.51% (12.7% annual)
10 year is 255.14% (13.5% annual)
20 year is 441.72% (8.8% annual)
All-time (1825-2021) is an annual average of 8.74% (+/- 18.32%)
Yes, this is a pretty brutal period, and somewhat not surprising. Invest wisely, keep putting money in, and rebalance, and you will be fine in the long run.
There has never been a 20-year calendar period where the stock market has averaged a loss, and that is since 1825.
Everybody just needs to breathe.
