Stock Splitting: Any Cons?

So I'm trying to wrap my head around this…
Lately it seems that every time a filing for a split is announced, the stock price jumps. I understand that the underlying value of the company doesn't change, and that the convenient explanation is that lower dollar value allows more retail investors to buy in.

My question is:
What is stopping most companies from splitting their shares?
