So where does Feb 2021 fit into all of this?

So from what I understand, bull and bear markets are defined by the overall market, meaning the big indices like S&P, NASDAQ etc. If this is the case, I'm wondering what to make of the fact that a large number of growth stocks hit their peaks in roughly Feb of 2021 and haven't gotten anywhere close to those valuations since. I even remember when we started going down in Dec that people brought up that a huge number of stocks had essentially crashed since Feb and only the big boys were keeping the indices up.

So was the drop since Feb 2021 the canary in the coal mine for what we're dealing with now or could I assume that growth has been in a bear market for over a year now. Because if so I'm wondering how that all ties into the current downturn.
