Retained earnings question on Crown Castle?

I was looking at the Real Estate company Crown Castle today and i noticed that although this company has long been profitable, its retained earnings/accumulated deficit is like minus 10 billion

This company is profitable and pays a 4% dividend, so what gives? This deficit has been building up for over ten years.
