Question about stop loss

Hello, I hope this is the right subreddit to ask this.

I don't understand well how stop loss works. For example:

If I open a trade for 500$ with a stop loss of 80%, will the trade close when I lose 100$ or when I lose 400$?

I searched a lot online but I couldn't find a simple example.
