Please explain to an idiot..

Explain to me like I’m 5..

I am filing my partners taxes this year and I have never filed gains and loses before.. Sounds simple enough. I put the info in but what’s stumping me for some silly reason is if I am suppose to categorize playing the stock market as Capital or Investment.. google isn’t much help. Please help an idiot.
