Parted with all my TSLA Stock in June. Everyone said I was dumb.

After having a brilliant post by Strokes and Spookes yesterday about selling his Tesla Stocks I wanted to share my experience in selling a HighRiskTechMeme tock and how hard it can be.

Right before the Covid crash in 2020 I read the book „The whale and the end of the world“. It’s a book about a pandemic hitting the world and how it impacts the stock market.

So I sold my ETF positions with +40% before the big crash came.

That was interesting since I planned never to sell and HODL until my pension. But on the other hand, I knew that a crash was incoming, so why not selling and try to reinvest?

In my research I repositioned myself and took a big position in Tesla at about 65 Dollars average price with the +40 percent win I took out of my ETF.

I was investing in Tesla because I believed in the product. I remember when I saw the first Tesla S in 2014, I was just super fascinated by the car. I could not believe how amazing the car looked, the big LCD Display, the door handles, the futuristic design. I was hooked and believed since that day that Tesla would become the next Apple. No even greater than that…

Elon Musk was a visionary for me back then. He was the Tony Stark of the real world, who would change the world with his innovation and vision. Cars have always been boring for me, but a Tesla even fascinated me.

And so I took the chance.

And then I was riding the green wave. The stock exploded and so did my holdings.

It was crazy. There were days where I could not believe the numbers in my depot. There were days where everyday I would add another 10-12k per day.

On the peak I was just kind of close to retirement levels.

But then times and mood shifted. Elon started to support Right Wings politic in his timeline. Then for month he was blabbering about the biggest risk of planet earth is population collapse. I was like WTF is he doing ?

Then he really started wanting to buy twitter and all the right wingers celebrated.
“Rep. Jim Jordan: Elon Musk Buying Twitter Would Be A Win For The First Amendment”

I think you know the rest of the story.

The Teslainvestor Forum was staying strong with Elon no matter what and believed in his vision. The Echo Chamber kept me away from thinking clearly.

But I tried and made a thought experiment. Instead of trying to reason Elon´s decisions I asked myself.

How would a Dream Elon CEO have to really act, to hold the valuation of Tesla and let

I imagined a Elon who would cooperate with environmental initiatives, connect with scientist of global warming, sharing ideas in his timeline of how to stop Climate Change with renewables, connecting with politicians like Al Gore or activists like Leonardo di Caprio.

Just using his wealth, fame, hype and prominence to connect all possibilities to generate another futuristic world.

But instead… you know the story…

So I remember when this story broke on a Friday.
„SpaceX paid a flight attendant $250000 in severance after she accused Elon Musk of exposing himself and offering to buy her a horse.“

The stock plummeted a good 10 percent. And I decided I had enough, and to use the weekend for a decision to hold, or sell it all. ( btw here you could see that bad news about Elon really influenced the stock in a great way )

I was still sitting on an immense sum that could buy me a small house and I thought:

1.I can hope that the stock goes back and far beyond what I have now

  1. I can take my 4x out now and maybe miss the opportunity above.

  2. I could hold forever and loose all the gains I had until now and would have no chance of reinvesting.

The Dodgecoin Millionaire came to my mind, who went from 200.000 to a Multi-Millionaire, but just could not sell and crashed all the way back down.

I spoke with friends and spoke about my perspective but nobody could really help me and could assure me that Elon would get Tesla back on track.

So after the Weekend, as soon as market opened I sold all my shares.

Of course right after, the stock reversed and from the lowest point of 212 It rose back over 300 in the next 2 month.

And here everybody said to me. „OH man, you sold at the bottom, you threw away a life time opportunity.“
It was crazy. I still had a 4x but I felt like a looser in that moment, because I had missed the possibility of a lifetime. Having the chance to never work again, having my pension paid.

But over the next month… you know the story.

Now I could not be happier to exited that stock at that point.

I don´t believe Tesla will come back to it’s ATH.
I think it still will fall much further.

But It’s not about showing me as a winner here. The interesting part is how hard it is too see through the fog of Social Media and how incredible hard it is to sell such a huge position, when times are changing. If you are in a Hype Stock like Tesla and you want to sell at the right time. There will be nobody. There will be absolutely nobody telling you, now is the right time to sell.

Everything in yourself, tells you to hold it, don’t be stupid, greed takes over, you just can not let it loose.

And even if you manage to do. Everyone will tell you, you were weak. You were dumb to sell. You will get hate and people will try to make you feel as a looser.

On the other hand you feel that you are married to the stocks you are holding. Hodlers will find any argument why a stock is the best and the Echo Chambers maximize the viewpoints and erase everything else as pure FUD.

So hard to see through this fog of influence from all sides.

Now after selling I just see new possibilities. I will not buy back into Tesla, but other Stocks. Tesla as a brand with another CEO will be successful. Tesla as a stock to ATH with a bigger valuation than all car brands combined: No way!

I have a big win and will split my money into safe ETFs but also will reinvest into more risky assets I see as the next rising stars.

People said fundamentals did not change for Tesla. But that is not true. The biggest fundamental of Tesla, was the old visionary Elon and his God-like potency for the world.

Within a few month Elon made it to go from a Super hero to a super villain. ( at least for his customer base )

I hope that thread maybe helps you to split from your once most favorable stock when fundamentals are changing.
It's so easy from a standpoint now that this was possibly a super-smart decision. But I just want to let you know, that it did not feel like winning in that moment and that doubts and hesitation will hold you back from your instincts.

Thanks for reading.
