My old employer was acquired by another private company- what happens to the common stock I own?

I left a previous employer last year and had around 5000 vested share, I purchased them so they are mine and vested, however company remained private.

Another company that is also private acquired my ex employer for cash and stock. What happens to my around 5000 shares?

Could they be worthless?
