Moderna, Novavax, and Pfizer – how long will Covid stick around?

MICHAEL WOROBEY: I want to actually get away from any kind of narrative that omicron is some sort of silver lining. It's irresponsible to suggest that there's some sort of preordained progression of viruses like this toward becoming benign.

STEIN: The next variant could just as easily be nastier and even better at outsmarting our immune systems. And any immunity we get from omicron could fade.

We know that Covid vaccines have peaked in demand. But it seems like people might be underestimating the Covid's prolonged effects. Every new variant will prompt renewed demand for vaccines globally. We're still giving out the flu vaccines every year and practically everyone has gotten the flu many times in their lifetimes.

It seems more likely that we're going to need covid vaccines for many years to come. It doesn't seem like it's a vaccine that you take once or twice and you're set for life. It “feels” more like a vaccine that you need every year or every other year. I'm no medical expert but most experts I've been reading seem to suggest this.

Pfizer seems like a pretty good company to put your money in and then forget it. They make more than just Covid vaccines so if vaccines aren't in huge demand in the future, they still have other revenue sources and won't crash. And they've shown that they can design and test vaccines fast, then make them at scale. People also trust them.
