Is META like ORCL?

Disclaimer: I have $0 financial investment in either META or ORCL.

Some time back in '99 or '00, I was at a professional development conference listening to a keynote speaker. He was going on about how some day all sorts of devices would be connected to the internet – TV's, refrigerator, thermostat, home cameras, etc. And how his niche (ish) language named Java was going to run it all. The keynote speaker's name was Larry Ellison.

I clearly recall a conversation with other attendees where we joked about his “internet of things”, who would really want everything in their home on the internet?!? We were all professional developers, full of knowledge and experience but lacking in vision. And here I am decades later coding software for IoT devices.

Some people are capable of a long term vision that others can only laugh at, not see.

Is Zuck like Ellison here? Beats me – personally I think the whole metaverse idea, while great in movies like Ready Player One, will actually suck. Maybe it's an enormous black hole absorbing cash. But perhaps it's not.. what do I know, I thought IoT was stupid 20 years ago.
