I need help with a question about investing.

Please delete if not allowed. I am kind of new to investing but my parents are not. I have a retirement fund set up. However, I see people are making so much money on options or just buying regular shares. I wanted to invest to try to make 30,000$ and that is all. My parents have 20k they want to play with. They only have invested in long term stocks in their retirement account. I feel like we are both losing out on big opportunities to make more with short term trading. I understand there is a lot of risk with that. I am watching countless videos on investing. I regret not investing in many stocks when I was advised to. I missed the opportunity to make money. How do we find out which stocks to invest in? Is it worth paying an advisor to help us? Where do you find your research on a stock to know the risk and rewards of investing in them? Theres plenty of books out there but they don’t tell me exactly what to invest in. How do I know where the money is? I know I can research companies and when they have big positive changes coming to their business that would add value to them. However, I don’t understand how to know the exact timing of when to sell. I am sorry this is a long message but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
