Hello fellow investors,
I would like to get your opinion on this, as this is the subreddit I frequent the most, it is one of the most popular on the subject of investing and people come here looking for advice on how to invest their hard-earned money, which is a rather sensitive matter.
It seems to me that the system penalizes different perspectives and the expression of controversial opinions, when instead it should aim to silence trolls, spammers, and perhaps those whose views are manifestly harmful and dangerous.
The downvote button is used more often than not as a weapon to remove dissenting views, and controversial opinions are downvoted into oblivion rather than discussed. This kills any form of fruitful exchange of views and leads people to be only ever exposed to the opinions they mainly agree with, which is hardly conducive to any form of development.
As a matter of fact, I sometimes happen to read comments that, although very reasonable and polite, collected a ridiculous amounts of downvotes. And at that point, it does not even matter any more what the person was trying to say, most people reading the comment will be strongly biased toward holding a herd mentality.
It is also absurd how the same comment (or post, for that matter) can receive drastically different scores. For instance, when I feel the person posting on this subreddit is going to take the most upvoted answers as actual financial advice, I tend to suggest to speak to a financial advisors and discuss their situation with them. Well, sometimes people agree, some others people downvote the hell out of my comment arguing that “Financial advisors are all thieves and scammers!”.
What do you guys think about this? Have you experienced this too, whether directly or indirectly?
