How does share buyback increase companies’ EPS metric?

I understand that EPS is earnings per share. and if a company buys back shares, it lowers the amount of shares out there. which means a smaller denominator so a higher ratio.

however, if they use their cash to spend on buy backs, wont that also affect their numerator value as well?
