First time stock buyer

I have some extra cash and wanted to throw it in the stock market. How do people go about picking which to buy? I am looking at Amazon, apple, google and Microsoft. I feel like these are safe bets. Do most people invest more so in smaller companies that have more risk but possibly more return? Sorry I am new to this and there is so much to learn
