DRSing Shares?

What does DRSing shares even accomplish? Can a broker do something with your shares that we don't know they are doing? I see people mentioning to DRS their shares with Computer Share, but what does this even accomplish? Without DRSing does it mean like in an extreme example that I could wake up one day and not have the shares that I didn't sell?, or my broker just uses them as shorts without me knowing?

“DRS Format allows shares to be transferred between a broker dealer and the transfer agent electronically. DRS shares are held in the name of the registered shareholder and are represented by a DRS Transaction Statement or DRS Advice.” does this mean that I can DRS my shares and move them from Schwab to Fidelity and not pay the $50 full account transfer fee that Schwab has?
