I have searched and found no answer to this. Apologies if it's the wrong sub to ask. I know what wash sale rule generally states, but it's not clear if it only applies in a sell event basis or individual share basis. For example, if, over the course of a month, I accumulated 100 shares of stock A at different price points, bought 1 share at a time, with individual share price ranging from $10-$100. Let's say my total cost for the whole 100 shares is $7000, averaging to $70 per share. When the stock rises to $80, I decide to sell all 100 shares all at once, for a gain of $1000. Obviously, for some shares that were bought above $80 before, they were a loss, but for other shares bought below $80 it's a gain, and the single sell event itself is a gain. If within 30 days (for ease, let's say it's within 30 days of all these shares), I decide to buy the stock again, does wash sale apply to some of the shares that were bought above $80? Or does IRS only regard this one sell event as a gain? Thanks in advance
