The r/stocks community is (IMO) the purest investing subreddit on the platform. I value the opinions of this community and am curious to get a pulse on something you’re all likely familiar with.
Full disclaimer: I’ve been heavily invested in GameStop since January 2021. If you’re ready to downvote or X out of this post now, I honestly want to hear from you the most.
Since January 2021 I have believed in my investment choice. I never forced my opinions on others, but I was happy to share what I thought. The response was mixed, and polarizing. Some people took a deeper look and chose to invest, while others laughed and wrote it off. That was totally fine, as for several months there were better investments.
At the beginning of 2022, I divested from other “safe” investments in favor of adding to my GameStop position. I continued to see more reasons to do that (totally a personal decision, as any investing is). I saw risk across all financially driven markets that outweighed the asymmetrical risk with GameStop as an investment (again, just my opinion at that time).
Fast forwarding to now, GameStop is outperforming the broader market; using a rolling 6 months, GME is up 12% when compared to the DJI down 14%.
As the story continues, I naively expected the naysayers to consider they were wrong to “write-off” GameStop as a value investment choice. Yet, there’s still a stigma that it’s risky and likely to end badly for longs. I have theories for what drives this stigma, but I’d rather hear from serious investors instead of making false assumptions.
I can go on and on about GameStop. I’ve enjoyed the memes, sure, and participate in the unique/quirky culture of “apes”. However, I take my investments very seriously and have a significant stake (for me, at least) in the company. So far, I’m pleased with my decision.
I’m not looking for anything other than insight from a community I respect. What are your thoughts on GameStop as a value stock? Do you think outperforming the market is a fluke? Why are you bearish? Why are you bullish?
Thank you
