Can someone explain covered calls to me

I would like to know if the only downside is that you are stuck with the stock and lose out on potential gains.

If you have conviction in a stock that in the long term it will perform well. Is selling covered calls a good way to make money.

I never thought about anything other than long term investing so this concept is very foreign to me
