But I thought stock is worthless if it doesn’t pay dividends!!

Let this TWTR sale to Elon Musk show everybody here something definitively: Stock is ownership. If you bought Twitter stock before Elon’s offer, it wasn’t giving you anything, no matter how well they did in earnings. But now, you’re getting $54.20 a share.

When you see that $54.20 in your account, know that it’s because Elon Musk paid it to you. To you. He said, “I want to buy twitter!!” And with his money, he will pay you for it.

Some may say, “well it isn’t ownership, because I would have held out for $69.42!!” Well, maybe you would have, if you owned more Twitter stock. Maybe you could have held up the deal. But with your paltry, small bit of ownership, you had no choice but to go along for the ride. If ten kids decide to split the cost of a baseball card, but only 9 of them agree to sell it later when they’re offered a massive profit, they’re not going to refuse to sell because you weren’t on board. Majority rules. In any case, Elon will be paying you. You can be made at your other shareholders if you want.

You get exactly as much influence over a company as you pay for. Elon is paying a lot more than you. But because stock is ownership, even though you contributed nothing to the business, even though your voice wasn’t heard, even though no one who works at twitter knows your name, you’re still getting $54.20 a share.

That’s the power of ownership. You benefitted from the sale of the business and didn’t have to do anything.
