Bank to “hand back billions to shareholders”

I own a small amount of Unicredit shares (about 3k). Apparently the bank is doing quite well, and they just announce the intention to hand over 5 billion $ to shareholders (part of it in “buybacks”).

What does it means for me? what's a buyback and is it a good thing?
