Advertising Revenue During Recessions


Does advertising expenditure by companies tend to be cut a recession, due to less cash available to consumers or does it tend to continue at a consistent rate?

I've seen many articles online saying how advertising during a recession can help a company take a greater market share as competitors go bust or scale back their spending on marketing, so it's advantageous, but in practice, does this actually happen?
