What happens to public shares when a company is made private?

Obviously this post is motivated by Twitter, so I'll use it as the example, but I'm asking in a general sense: when a company is bought out and goes private, what happens to all the public shares and retail investors like myself who own stock the?

For example, I own a couple shares of Twitter, what's going to happen to them? Am I just forced to sell them? I never thought about it but what if I were to say “No Elon I don't want to sell my shares to you”? I'm pretty sure I can't do that, but why not? They're my shares, I own them, I should be able to decide who I sell them to.

But that's secondary, what's really important is what actually happens. Do I just wake up next week and my shares are gone and I have cash in my Public account? Will it be for the whole $54/share the $44 Billion offer comes out to, or does some of that money go somewhere else?
