what happends during earning calls?

i started investing for the first time last week. i currently have 11 stocks in my portfolio ($5000 total invested) and a few of them has earning calls sometime this month. was it a good idea to buy in the same month of earning calls and what usually happens after earning releases do stock prices go up and if yes, a lot? im hoping that's the case>?
