TLDR: Great uncle gave me Berkshire Hathaway B stocks when I was a kid, they’ve split since then and I now have 150 shares (about $62,000 currently) worth of b shares. How do I recover them, as he (a hermit to say the least) put my name on the stocks incorrectly.
Long version: my great uncle purchased 3 shares of Berkshire Hathaway b common stock for a few of us grand nieces/nephews a few decades back. He didn’t know my last name since my mom had changed hers, and the stock certificate (which I still have) has my full name with my mother’s maiden name.
My mother allegedly ensured my social is correct on the account. The stock has split in the decades intervening, and my very that says 3 b shares should now be 150 b shares (worth around $62,000).
I received mail about stock recovery and changing my name and/or selling it, but many of the services are going to charge a 15% value on that stock to get the name and ownership fixed.
Just wondering if that’s just how it’s going to be (can’t complain since I didn’t exactly work for this, it’s all a blessing at this point) or if there is a different way to fix this whole situation that doesn’t end with me losing 15% of the share value before even considering capital gains tax. Thank you
