The amount of wealth share per generation is roughly as follows. Silent Generation – 11% of wealth/Boomers – 50% wealth/GenX – 30% and millennial – 9% of wealth. So the silent money will quickly transfer to boomers as those folks are 90+.
Given that the millennials are strapped with more debt and higher costs of living. I would imagine a lot of that boomer money will be taken out of the market to cover debts. Will the market continue its growth in say 15-20 years or will we have heavy stagnation as the 2040s approach. The reason I ask is I’m planning to retire in 2043. I’m an older millennial and if everyone of a certain age group inherits a shitload of wealth at the same time frame how will that affect the price of stocks. I can imagine there being a significant sell off in the 2040s.
We did not really see that when silent money transferred to boomers but the level of wealth the older generation had is not comparable to what the boomer generation has. The boomers cost of living was also much less when they were our age. Keep in mind that silent generation didn’t also have Schwab and fidelity apps and as much trust or access to the stock market. It was put money in bonds and mutual funds and forget about it. You might visit your local Wells Fargo once a year to drop off a check.
