Tesla, by giving up on radar, opted to be an EV (Electric Vehicle) prioritized company rather than a robotaxi prioritized one. Radars were costly for EVs but very important for robotaxis. Tesla, at the cost of falling behind in the robotaxi race for a few years, gave up on radars and focused on profiting from EVs. Tesla was well aware that the costs of radar and lidar were much lower than the cost of employing a driver for years, and that the key to profiting from robotaxis was to produce them first and in the safest way possible. However, they have lost the advantage of collecting a great deal of data from all this hardware at the expense of lowering EV costs.
