I turned eighteen this past June of 2023 and decided to invest the majority of the money I earned over the summer into various investments through a Roth IRA to hopefully set up my retirement. However, after now having spent time over the past five months trying to determine the best course of action, I really feel like I'm lost and don't know who to trust for honest, wise, and accurate advice. There are so many market analysts out there, yet most aren't rich because they don't truly know what they are doing, I want to follow and learn from the actual experts.
Consequently I have a few questions. Who are the most safe investing experts on the internet or who have written books that I could read? Also, how much of my portfolio should be in index funds/ETFs as opposed to individual stocks and Mutual Funds?
My last main question that has plagued my mind is this: How do I know what stocks to sell and when? Will these index funds over the next 50 years, overall, just get infinitely bigger or does progress have to stop at some point? And for individual stocks and penny stocks, how do I know when to sell them in my portfolio to make the biggest gain to reinvest back into more index funds?
Thank you so much for any time you spend answering these complex questions, I truly need the advice since no one in my life has real experience with this kind of investing.
