How do energy companies move in relationship to the indices and interest rates? Thoughts on buying energy as a hedge?

I’m wondering if buying energy ETF’s is a good hedge during a recession or period of high inflation. Seems like it’s not affected by higher for longer interest rates. When most markets rally do energy stocks rally too?

Wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on holding some energy ETF’s for the mid/long term. Cheers!
