Has the economy always been this volatile and confusing to read?

I only recently started following financial news. This past year, it's very evident that our economy is going through a tumultuous and volatile phase. However, I wanted to know if things have always been like this? Every other day someone is calling for a recession, and the days between, analysts are saying we're in for a soft-landing. Has this always been the case?
