Company stock help

I work for a company that gives everybody a certain amount of stocks in that company each year. This would be my first year working for them so I got 37 shares. They sent out an email saying that the stock is about to split. I’m not really sure what that means, the people at work were telling me that my 37 shares with them to go up to 74 shares. Any help would be greatly appreciated
