if i were to diversify on large caps stocks could I outperform the sp500?

Hi all. Has anybody tried this? In your guys opinion.. stocks like MSFT, TSLA, APPLE, NFLX, SHOPIFY, AMZN, Alphabet(google) etc generally money making beasts over the long term, im just wondering like why would i put my money in VTI if i could diversify myself unless its impossible for the average joe to outperform the index from my understanding the sp500 has both good and bad money making companies without going into too much detail but im not sure which is why im seeking yall investors perspective
