NFLX going forward

(disclaimer, i have no positions on NFLX, but in light of their earnings today, i imagine this conversation going down)

person: “that’s IT! i’m DONE with netflix!”

netflix: “so sorry to see you go, what made your experience unenjoyable?”

person: “i WAS getting your content for free from my cousin’s boyfriend, but now you’re booting us off because of your dumb password sharing rules”

netflix: “…interesting. are you saying you weren’t actually paying anything for our service?”

person: “well, i WASN’T, and NOW i will!”

netflix: “ok well, hmm. this seems awkward. but we actually don’t really care if you stay or leave. you contributed nothing to our bottom line. in fact, if you leave, you’ll probably boost our revenue because there will be more bandwidth for paying customers.”

person: “wait, you’re not going to acquiesce to our demands?”

netflix: “i mean, no. that would actually be a really poor business decision on our end. offering our wares for free? how are we supposed to keep growing?”

person:

person:

netflix: “are you still there?”

person: “yeah, i guess i just realized i have zero leverage in this debate and got used to free stuff that shouldn’t have been free to begin with.”

tl;dr if you plan on “leaving” netflix because you don’t like being forced to pay for their content, you’re not their target audience anyway.
