Why didn’t Ford overtake GM after the latter went bankrupt?

We all know Ford refused to be bailed out when GM and Dodge declared bankruptcy. Americans viewed Ford more favorably. How come people still bought more GM? Did Ford fail to capitalize on GM's misfortunes or has GM been executing flawlessly?
