How do you pick growth stocks?

Hi everyone,

I'm a fairly new investor (~early 20s), so far I've really bought into index funds and dividend stocks, but have been hearing that I need to look more and more into growth stocks. I'm interested in picking a few individual growth stocks. Beyond the obvious stable but growing tech picks like Microsoft, Apple, Google, etc. how do you identify growth? Is it a lot of betting on potential of a product/idea? A lot of the growth stocks that soar in value seem to not be showing positive earnings. I'm curious how to identify and get in on growth stocks, since it seems like its largely gambling to me.
