Are paper gains sold really a “loss”?

Ok. Assume I had $100k in my ROTH (so no taxes involved) and I'm now down to $70k and I decide to sell everything cause I think the market is gonna suck for the next year to year and a half.

Lets say my ROTH began with a $70k principal amount and the gains were $30k over a few years.

So now I'm back to my principle amount and I don't wanna “lose” more and i think the market is gonna tank another 25% or more and I can buy in THEN and hopefully make more on the way back up.

Would you sell everything with no tax hit? Especially in our current environment? Possible ww3?

Thanks
