Investing in the bad guys? (anti ESG)

With all the hype of ESG and intentionally investing in companies that (supposedly) are committed to making a positive difference in the world, are you going against the grain expecting a higher ROI?

The top holdings of XVV (ESG screened S&P 500 ETF) are AAPL, MSFT, AMZN, BRKB, GOOGL – about the same as the regular SP500 as well as Nasdaq. Assuming stocks like that are massively overbought while companies in industries such as fossil fuel, nuclear energy, weapons, alcohol etc have been left out.

Thinking about companies like Exxon, Chevron, Philip Morris, Altria, Lockheed, Raytheon etc

(unnecessary disclaimer: I invest to make money and can take those profits to do something positive like donate or volunteer. I also don't care about (US) politics)
